Preservation and utilisation of historic citadels

The caretaking and preservation of historic citadels causes considerable problems and asks for a thorough knowledge of history and the technical disciplines. But there is more: it also needs the same amount of knowledge on planological, architectural, constructive and monumental aspects - and environmental and ecological aspects! Not to mention economical and cultural aspects. In order to be able to preserve and maintain historic citadels, we have to come to a well-balanced plan weighing all the above mentioned subjects before we can even think of re-using these historic structures.

In 2001, an international conference was held, with participants from all over Europe, exchanging views, plans, theories and experiences. This book contains a large amount of essays about citadels all over Europe and the specific problems that were encountered for their preservation and utilisation.

The essays are about: Brandenburg, citadels in Italy, Erfurt, Düsseldorf, Jülich, Mainz, Festung Senftenberg, Spandau, Copenhagen, Festung Dömitz, Slavonski Brod, Festung Friedrichsort, Festung Rosenberg, Citadels in the Netherlands, Prague, Festung Großfriedrichsburg (Ghana).

All in all - a magnificent book for anyone interested or professionally engaged in preservation of historic fortifications. The book is written in German, but has English summaries. It is illustrated with 240 photos, plans, drawings and maps.
