Being an important port, the city of Antwerp has always had an important relationship with the sea itself, but also with the river Scheldt - Antwerp's important supply and transport route. As a result of this importance, the city and its port had to be defended in case of an enemy attack. For this reason fortifications and defences were constructed. This book describes the defences that wer built between 1838 and 1944 - including those built by the Germans in both World Wars! It describes the forts and batteries with all their architectural details - with floorplans and drawings of all the individual sites. But the book is also about (coastal) artillery - it describes the individual types of artillery and torpedos that were used - also with the help of technical drawings of each type. The book is written in Dutch and is illustrated with more than 120 photos, plans, drawings and maps. Warmly recommended for fortifications- as well as artillery-fans! |
