Fort Steendorp was built between 1882 and 1892, and is one of the largest forts ever built in Belgium. It is also the last fort built in brick - the last in almost 800 years of brick fortifications. The fort was surrounded by dry ditches, unique for Antwerp. After the construction, most parts of the fort received a concrete reinforcement - cupolas were never placed. The fort was severely damaged in both World Wars. It was de-classified as fortification and made suitable to house a manufacturing plant for the production of gasses for warfare! After World War Two, the fort evolved in a natural habitat and is now one of the most important sanctuaries for bats in Western Europe. The book is entirely written in Dutch and contains more tan 100 photos, drawings, plans and maps. |
