The book puts them in their historical context and tells about how they 
were meant to work. It tells of historical events, sieges and wars.

The book is illustrated with 1,000 new photographs and hundreds 
of maps. Each facility includes directions, information about the 
owner and whether it is open to the public.

Swedish castles and fortresses have been written by nine leading 
connoisseurs of Swedish fortification art. The main author is 
Leif Törnquist, former director of the Swedish Defense History 
Museums.
