a guide to Sweden's castles and fortresses - the book about Swedish fortification
art for 2,000 years. It takes you from ancient castles such as
Eketorp and Runsa via the medieval Kalmar castle and the great power
Carlsten during the Cold War Muskö, Säve and Hemsö, built for the
Third World War. The book includes facilities that until recently were Sweden's most secret.
Sweden's history is closely linked to the castles and fortresses.
The book puts them in their historical context and tells about how they
were meant to work. It tells of historical events, sieges and wars.
The book is illustrated with 1,000 new photographs and hundreds
of maps. Each facility includes directions, information about the
owner and whether it is open to the public.
Swedish castles and fortresses have been written by nine leading
connoisseurs of Swedish fortification art. The main author is
Leif Törnquist, former director of the Swedish Defense History
Museums. |
