The book is, in fact, a reprint of a "Course de Fortification permanente", as used at the French "Ecole d'Application de l'Artillerie et du Génie" in March 1882. With a preface by Philippe Truttmann, this book describes the period between Vauban and the arrival of rifled artillery around 1870. All the different theories are described in detail - French, Dutch, German, etc. - all with the use of beautiful drawings, plans and maps. The theories of all the famous fortress-designers and - engineers like Vauban, Van Coehoorn, Montalembert, Speclin, Carnot, and many others.
