Description

During World War Two, about 65 % of the buildings of Wilhelmshaven were destroyed by 102 Allied bombing raids during which about 83000 bombs were released on the city.  The reason for this huge amount of bombing raids was the presence of the most important naval strongpoint in Wilhelmshaven. Next to this, many of the famous German warships were built here - with names like "Admiral Scheer",  "Admiral Graf Spee", "Scharnhorst" and "Tirpitz".

To be able to offer protection to military personnel and civilians during the bombing raids on the city hundreds of airraid shelters and - bunkers were built in the city - varying from one-man bunkers to giant bunkers that could protect 3000 people during a bombing raid.

This book tells the story of these bunkers in Wilhelmshaven. It shows the different types - with the help of 255 photos in colour as well as 155 photos in black & white (!!!). The author describes 191 (!!) bunkers in Wilhelmshaven. But he also shows many bunkers that have been demolished since the war, with often spectacular photos of the explosions. In the back of the book you will find a separate, folding map (measuring 38 x 50 cm and printed on both sides of the map) on which the 191 bunkers that are described in the book are pinpointed - with a statement "present" or "removed". This makes is VERY easy to find the remaining bunkers in and around Wilhelmshaven! A warmly recommended book!
