The most spectacular and certainly largest gun ever built was the German-made railway gun with the codename "Dora". Designed, developed and built in World War Two, the gun had a total weight of 1350 tons, carried by a total amount of 80 wheels and only able to move on a specially constructed double-set of rails. The gun was able to fire a shell, weighing over 7 tons and able to penetrate 1 meter of steel, 8 meter of concrete and 32 meters of earth. A truely formidable weapon - one of Hitler's "Wunderwaffen". The gun was used by the German Army during the siege of Sewastopol, where is completely destroyed several Russian fortifications. The books tells the history of the design, construction and deployment of this awesome weapon, together with all the technical details and characteristics of it. The book is written entirely in German and is illustrated with more than 100 photos and drawings and gives the reader an idea of the giant proportions of this weapon. |
