In 1914, the town of Toul (France) was one of the most fortified towns of France - all according the ideas of General Séré de Rivieres. Construction started in 1874 - after the French defeat in 1870. All the new and modern views about fortification were incorporated in these forts. New views on building materials - masonry was replaced by concrete - but also on armour and artillery. Cupolas and armour was more and more used in the forts of Toul. This book describes the entire evolution, design, construction, armament, etc. of the forts of Toul. It describes the general ideas and theories of the defence of Toul, but it also describes the individual fortifications - with many details of their armament, equipment and architecture. It is entirely written in French and contains MANY HUNDREDS of photos, plans, drawings and maps - some in full-colour. A MUST for anyone interested in French fortifications in general, and in particular the fortifications as designed by Séré de Rivieres. Many of the forts are still present and can be visited - this book shows the way! |
