The book describes and analises the German bunkers on the Channel Island of Jersey.
The Channel Islands were - and still are! - a unique part of Hitler's Atlantic Wall. Due to Hitler's obsession with retaining the Islands at all costs, there were more defences per square mile than at any other point on the main Atlantic Wall. Here, one may not find the largest bunkers, but there are many unique constructions which do not exist elsewhere. Furthermore, vast distances do not have to be covered to visit them and - apart from the depredations of post-war scrap metal merchants - they are mostly in good order, having been either sealed for some thirty years, put to commercial use, or restored by the Channel Islands Occupation Society with the blessing of the local authorities. This book describes the different types of bunkers to be found on Jersey and explains why they were built. It divides the bunkers in different groups: beach defence bunkers, shelters for personnel, weapons, ammunitions and equipment, command posts, artillery batteries, artillery observation posts, signals bunkers, anti-aircraft installations, machine gun and mortar-bunkers, tobruks and tank-turret bunkers, field type & miscellaneous construction. Ginns also describes some of the bunker complexes on the island as well as bunker fitting and equipment, ventillation and gas-proofing. All in all: an important book on German bunkers - entirely written in English and illustrated with HUNDREDS of photos, drawings, maps and bunkerplans. |
